Finding expression through form and material

Sample Artist is a contemporary sculptor based in North Yorkshire, creating work inspired by landscape, natural forms and the physical qualities of materials.

The practice begins with observation: the curve of a hillside, the surface of weathered stone, the tension between two forms or the shadow created by an opening. These ideas are developed through sketches, models and direct experimentation with materials.

Rather than reproducing nature literally, the sculptures simplify and reinterpret these influences. Shape, weight, texture and negative space become a way of creating work that feels familiar while remaining abstract.

Each sculpture is made with close attention to how it will be experienced from different viewpoints and how changing light alters its surface throughout the day.

The aim is to create sculpture that feels calm, tactile and enduring, while allowing the material itself to remain an important part of the work.
